Tanning Program

The Cumberland County Health Department receives funding through the State of New Jersey’s Department of Health Public Health Sanitation & Safety Program to conduct inspections on tanning operations throughout our jurisdiction. These inspections focus on the sanitary conditions within the facilities as well as their safety measures. One of the most important aspects of our inspection is to ensure that the facility has control over who is allowed to use the tanning equipment.

New Jersey law bans minors under the age of 14 years old from using indoor tanning devices. Also. New Jersey law bans minors under the age of 17 years old from using indoor tanning devices unless a parent or guardian is onsite and grants permission . The law is based on significant scientific evidence that links indoor tanning to increased risk of developing melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.

The New Jersey tanning regulations are available under N.J.A.C 8:28
