Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT)

Hazmat

Part of the County Environmental Health Act agreement that Cumberland County Health Department has with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is to ensure that around the clock hazardous material response services are provided to our jurisdiction. Cumberland County Health Department accomplishes this by maintaining an on call inspector who is capable of responding to a hazardous material incident and evaluating the severity. For more severe incidents, the Health Department has contracted with the Vineland City Fire Department for the services of their Hazardous Materials Response Team. The Vineland City Hazardous Materials Response Team is made up of members from the Vineland, Bridgeton, & Millville Fire Departments who are New Jersey State Police Hazardous Material Technician certified.

The Vineland City Hazardous Materials Response Team is responsible for stopping a release and mitigating any hazard that may be posed by the material. They do not perform hazardous material cleanup. Once the scene is stable and secured, it is turned over to the Health Department representative who ensure that the responsible party cleans up the released material using an appropriate environmental contractor.

The Health Department also investigates hazardous material complaints. Confirmed complaints are forwarded to the appropriate division of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for enforcement.
